Snow Emergency & Snow/Ice Removal Information

A snow emergency exists in the City from November 15 to April 15 whenever a snowfall is predicted to reach a depth of three inches or more during any period of 24 hours or less.

The snow emergency will remain in effect for 48 hours or until the snow removal operations have been declared complete. During a snow emergency, no vehicles are allowed to be parked on any public street or alley from the hours of 12:00 midnight to 7:00 AM, or until the snow removal operations have completely cleared the street or alley.

In addition, the full width of the sidewalk in front of or adjoining homes, buildings, or unoccupied lots (including the portion of sidewalk bordering the crosswalk and the curb ramp) is to be cleared of snow accumulation or ice by 11:00 AM of each day by the owner or occupant of the property. In the case where snow continues to fall after 11:00 AM, then snow and ice is to be removed within three hours of daylight the day after it ceases to fall.

Regardless of the source of snow or ice, the width of the sidewalk is to be kept clear. Any ice accumulation is to be sprinkled with sand or salt to prevent the ice from becoming dangerous until a time when it can be removed. Ice must be promptly removed once possible.

Snow and ice not removed by the owner, occupant, or the person in charge of the building or property abutting the sidewalk will be removed by the City and billed to the property owner. In addition, no person may push, plow, blow, scoop, pile, or in any way deposit any snow or ice onto any public street, alley, sidewalk, or public lands dedicated public use which are used for vehicular or pedestrian traffic. If a street terrace (also known as the area between the sidewalk and curb, or street in the absence of a curb) does not exist, only then may snow be pushed from the sidewalk to the street, (not a driveway to the street). However, this MUST be done PRIOR to the city's removal of snow from the street.
